Build your own worldview

It is important to develop the skill and habit of thinking for yourself. This aligns choices with values which reduces regret, second-guessing, and a more focused growth. This also allows you to also resist trends and borrowed opinions. All in all, it’s clear standards and integrity, high agency, and cleaner tradeoffs.

Avoid generalization from specific experiences

It’s very easy to default to generalization from specific experiences, especially when contexts are not static. When listening, actively look for examples that weaken the theory and then find ways to improve on the theory. This way, we can understand the world deeply by improving our explanations.

Prioritize solid fundamentals

When unsure, choose the option that still works if the trend disappears. Believe in fundamentals that endure while hype decays. Trends are layers atop basics. Prefer skills and habits that transfer across contexts that serve well. In parallel, go deep in interesting domains to learn and regardless whether this domain fades, the learning endures.

Challenge assumptions

Between people generalizing from specific experiences and different worldviews, it’s important to cut through the noise to expose hidden constraints and reduce errors. This invites creativity and make better decisions towards the actual solution.

Build things to learn

Building things is operating in a space with a lot of unknowns, which is a very different learning experience and invites a lot of deep and reflective thinking.
